William R. Goodin, Ph.D. and Captain Mordechai Levin Receive 2010 Society of Women Engineers Rodney D. Chipp Memorial Awards

CHICAGO – November 12, 2010 – The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is pleased to announce William R. Goodin, Ph.D. and Captain Mordechai Levin as recipients of the 2010 Rodney D. Chipp Memorial Award. This award celebrates and recognizes a man, company or institution with significant contributions to the acceptance and advancement of women in engineering.

“Both Dr. Goodin and Captain Levin are committed to creating opportunities that advance women in engineering,” says Siddika Demir, SWE president. “Dr. Goodin’s initiative, perseverance and perspective have been key to the continued success of programs for the development of women engineers, and Captain Levin’s passion for proportional representation of women in STEM fields is evident from his impressive record of achievement.”

Dr. Goodin was recognized for steadfast support of advancing women in engineering and for actively encouraging participation of women in programs that foster technical leadership skills. Dr. Goodin is director of Short Course and Technical Management Programs for the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Extension, where he manages more than 150 engineering and technical management courses on campus and at company sites around the world.

Captain Levin was recognized for directing his aerospace education expertise to inform and inspire young and underrepresented women about careers in engineering. Captain Levin is executive director and founder of Masterflight Foundation Inc., an organization aiming to increase opportunities for young women and men – especially underrepresented minorities – in all science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.

The Rodney D. Chipp Memorial Award is named in honor of the husband of Beatrice Hicks, SWE’s first president.  A prominent engineer who demonstrated significant support and enthusiasm for SWE, Rodney D. Chipp was the first of many men who championed SWE.

The 2010 Rodney D. Chipp Memorial Award recipients were recognized on November 5 at WE10, the Society’s Annual Conference. WE10 took place at the Orange County Convention Center, November 4-6, in Orlando, FL. More than 5,300 attendees included collegians and professionals from the industry, government and academia.
